Coriander Chutney

Description

Chutney made of coriander. Best served with Dosas, Idlis, or Chapatis. Also called Kothamalli chutney or kothamalli thokku.

Ingredients

1/2 teaspoon Mustard
1/2 teaspoon Cumin seeds
1 medium tomato
1 big bunch Coriander leaves
6 pods Garlic
3 teaspoon Chana Dal
5 long Red Chili
8 teaspoon Coconut flakes
1 1/2 teaspoon Salt
3/4 teaspoon Tamarind paste (mixed in 100ml. water)
50 ml. Oil (Canola/Sunflower)
200 ml. Water

Method

  1. Chop coriander leaves
  2. Chop tomato into small cubes
  3. Peel garlic and chop them into reasonably thin slices
  4. Pour 3 teaspoon oil in a shallow frying pan in low-medium heat.
  5. Add mustard and cumin seeds and wait till they splutter
  6. Add garlic and fry slightly till they turn golden
  7. Add tomato and fry till the skin peels off
  8. Add coriander leaves and fry till it shrinks
  9. Wait till the mixture gets to room temperature and put in a mixer. Add tamarind water and salt. Grind to a coarse paste by adding water as required.
  10. Splutter mustard and cumin seeds in oil and pour on top of the paste.
